Building Our Dream Home with Kingston

When we first started thinking about building a new home, it felt overwhelming. Since we were downsizing from a house we’d lived in for 25 years, it wasn’t just about moving; it was about reimagining how we wanted to live. Working with Kingston Homes made what seemed like an insurmountable task an exciting, achievable goal.

Why We Chose Kingston

We first heard about Kingston through friends, and as we dug deeper, it quickly became clear they were the right choice for us. We did plenty of research—online, through conversations with others, and even by visiting events like the Parade of Homes. Everywhere we turned, Kingston had a glowing reputation.

When we found the Ashbury community in Felida, we knew it was the perfect location. It’s quiet, surrounded by beautiful homes—not strip malls—but still close to shopping and restaurants, just five or ten minutes away. The location was everything we were looking for.

When we were about to make our final decision on the lot, Chris, Kingston’s director of sales, reassured us, saying, “This is the lot for you.” He was so confident and knowledgeable, and that gave us the confidence to move forward.

A Home Built for the Way We Live

After living in a nearly 4,500-square-foot home for 25 years, we knew exactly what we wanted—and what we didn’t want—in our next house. We wanted to downsize but keep all the rooms the same size, which was really important to us. I also dreamed of an L-shaped craftsman-style home with a certain number of bedrooms, and somehow, Kingston made it happen.

What stood out to us was their flexibility. With other builders, we felt limited to pre-designed floor plans. But with Kingston, we were able to sit down with Chris and their architect to design a home from the ground up, just the way we wanted it. This floor plan doesn’t even exist on Kingston’s website—it’s completely customized to fit our needs and our lifestyle.

The Team Made It Easy

From the beginning, we felt so comfortable with Kingston’s team. Every single person we worked with—from the architect to the trim carpenter—treated us like we’d known them for years. They listened, they advised, and they cared about the details.

I even remember being in a store, buying patio furniture, and calling Chris with a question about the dimensions. He answered right away and gave me the information I needed. That’s how responsive and customer-focused they are.

Kingston’s vendors and subcontractors are just as professional and friendly. They guided us through the countless choices we had to make and helped us figure out what would look good and work best for our home.

Now that it’s finished, we absolutely love our home. It’s beautiful and functional, and it’s customized to fit exactly how we live at this stage of our lives.

Looking back, we couldn’t be happier with our decision to work with Kingston. The entire process was seamless, and they treated us like we were their most important clients. If you’re thinking about building a home and you want something truly customized to your needs and lifestyle, Kingston is the company for you—no doubt about it.

The bottom line is this: with Kingston, no is never the answer. If you want something and you’re willing to invest in it, they’ll make it happen.

Kingston didn’t just build us a house. They built us a home that reflects who we are and how we want to live. And for that, we’ll always be grateful.

Kingston Homes LLC is an award-winning Southwest Washington home builder specializing in luxury custom homes. For over a decade, we have developed thriving communities throughout the Vancouver Metro Area, including Ridgefield, Felida, Camas, Washougal, and Salmon Creek.

Winter in the Pacific Northwest brings unique challenges, from heavy rainfall and gusty winds to occasional snow and freezing temperatures. Preparing your home for the season not only ensures comfort but also helps prevent costly repairs. We’ve outlined some tips to help you winterize your home and keep it safe and warm this season.

preparing-your-home-for-winter-in-the-pacific-northwest

Seal and Insulate

One of the easiest ways to prepare your home for winter is to ensure it is correctly sealed. While our homes at Kingston meet or exceed industry standards in terms of energy efficiency, it’s important to maintain the weather seals around your doors and windows, no matter where you live. Drafts from windows, doors, outlets, and plumbing fixtures can significantly impact how well your house maintains a comfortable temperature. Sealing your home correctly is also an easy way to save money on your utility bills.

Good insulation is critical for keeping your house warm. If you are not living in a Kingston Home and are having difficulty keeping your home at a comfortable temperature, now is a great time to add extra insulation to your attic, crawl spaces, and walls to keep warm air inside and cold air out. However, Kingston-built homes are properly insulated and shouldn’t require you to add more.

preparing-your-home-for-winter-in-the-pacific-northwest

Gutters, Downspouts, and Roof Inspection

Rain is a defining element of the Pacific Northwest. You are less likely to have issues with ice dams, leaks, mold, and water pooling if you clean your gutters and downspouts ahead of the season. Remove any debris build-up that you find from the gutters, downspouts, and roof.

It is also a great time to inspect your roof. Heavy rain and occasional snow can strain it. Inspect for loose, missing, or damaged shingles. Inspect and seal exposed nail heads around vents and other roofing penetrations. Address any issues quickly. If you aren’t sure what to look for, consider hiring a professional to ensure your roof and gutters will withstand the elements of winter.

Service Your Heating System

A well-functioning heating system is necessary for winter comfort. Schedule a professional inspection and maintenance for your furnace or heat pump to check that it’s running efficiently. You might also want to replace or clean your filters to improve air quality and system performance. If you have a fireplace, it is a great time to do your annual testing and maintenance. We want to ensure you can get cozy by the fire on those cold winter days.

preparing-your-home-for-winter-in-the-pacific-northwest

Protect Plumbing

Check your pipes for proper insulation to prevent them from bursting during freezing temperatures. While all Kingston homes are properly insulated and shouldn’t need extra attention, it’s important to schedule maintenance inspections. If you find an exposed pipe, now is a great time to wrap it with foam insulation, especially if it is in unheated areas like crawl spaces and garages.

Your outdoor water valves should be shut off and covered with foam faucet covers. All outdoor hoses should be disconnected and removed from hose bibs; leaving them connected can freeze the water inside. If you have a dedicated shut-off for your outdoor faucets, it’s best to turn off the water and cover it with an insulating cap. If you have an irrigation system, turn the water off and blow out the lines with air.

We know that seasonal maintenance can feel overwhelming to some. Don’t be afraid to consult with professionals who specialize in these areas for assistance and opinions.

preparing-your-home-for-winter-in-the-pacific-northwest

Prepare Your Yard

Southwest Washington experiences at least one winter storm each year, which can bring significant wind, ice, and snow. Trimming trees and shrubs near your house is vital to reduce the risk of branches falling during these storms. Raking leaves and clearing debris from sidewalks and pathways prevents soggy and slippery surfaces. Although these storms sometimes happen only once a year, getting the proper equipment to combat this weather is a worthy investment to keep your driveways and walkways clear and safe.

Please note that Kingston Homes does not recommend using deicing chemicals on your driveway or sidewalk. Doing so will void your concrete’s warranty. Even a deicer that claims to be safe for concrete can cause damage over time.

preparing-your-home-for-winter-in-the-pacific-northwest

Preparing your home for winter in the Pacific Northwest is all about planning and preventative maintenance. By addressing these key areas, you can keep your home cozy, safe, and efficient all season long, no matter what the weather brings. Taking the time to winterize now will save you from headaches later, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Northwest during the winter season.

We hope you find these steps helpful. For specific recommendations for your home, please refer to the owner’s manual and warranty.

The popularity of luxury multi-generational homes has been increasing over the past few years. In fact, it has become so popular that some question whether it still qualifies as a trend.

Families are seeking to build elegant, spacious homes to accommodate multiple generations. They want these homes to provide privacy and comfort—blending the best of luxury and family living. But why has this trend become the norm?

The Return to Family Living

Living with family is making a comeback, but with a modern, upscale twist. More and more families want the benefits of living with loved ones, but they also want privacy. This trend is more than about shared living spaces; it’s also about fostering a sense of togetherness. There are several reasons for this change, but aging in place and financial freedom are at the forefront.

Why Multi-Generational Luxury Living is a Popular Choice

A Generational Bond

More people entering retirement are choosing to age at home rather than at a retirement facility. This family design provides a higher quality of life for retirees and reduces the financial burden. Many families have also found that having their aging loved ones at home leads to a better quality of life for everyone.

A Path to Home Ownership

Second to aging in place are finances and shared expenses. As housing becomes more expensive, families and friends are choosing to buy homes together. Building a custom multi-generational home is the best solution to ensure the home meets the needs of all the owners.

Why Multi-Generational Luxury Living is a Popular Choice

What Makes a Multi-Generational Luxury Home?

Building a luxury multi-generational home allows you to customize the design to support your unique needs. Below are some of the most popular features.

Private Suites

Private suites are the ideal solution for aging in place or multi-family shared living experiences. Most have kitchenettes and bathrooms, and some have private laundry and entrances. Incorporating private suites into your luxury home design creates a private retreat from busy shared spaces.

Ensuites

Ensuites are another popular choice for multi-generational homes. These individual primary suites have private baths and are surging in popularity in luxury homebuilding. If your multi-generational living plan includes sharing a common kitchen space, ensuites might be a great option for your custom home design.

Why Multi-Generational Luxury Living is a Popular Choice

Luxury Amenities

A hallmark of luxury homes is amenities. Luxury multi-generational homes can include everything from theaters, spas, gyms, and even pools. Everyday amenities like these help household members live comfortably, entertain, and create more common spaces within the home.

Why Multi-Generational Luxury Living is a Popular Choice

Spacious Outdoor Living

Luxury outdoor living spaces serve as an extension of the home. Most feature comfortable lounges, dining areas, and outdoor kitchens. Fireplaces, outdoor heating, and entertainment make these areas perfect for year-round use.

Guest Houses, Outbuildings, and Outdoor Spaces

Building a home on land gives you the freedom to create a unique design for your lifestyle. With enough space, your custom home design can include guest houses, workshops, or RV garages.

Multi-Generational Living is Not a Trend Anymore

Several factors are driving the enduring popularity of multi-generational luxury homes. For most, it’s a long-term decision to support the needs of family members. For others, it’s to provide comfort for long-term house guests. Regardless of the reason, multi-generational living is becoming more prevalent for home buyers.

Whether you choose to build on your land or in one of our communities, our goal is to help you build a home that is perfect for your needs and lifestyle.
