When we first started thinking about building a new home, it felt overwhelming. Since we were downsizing from a house we’d lived in for 25 years, it wasn’t just about moving; it was about reimagining how we wanted to live. We first heard about Kingston through friends, and as we dug deeper, it quickly became clear they were the right choice for us. We did plenty of research—online, through conversations with others, and even by visiting events like the Parade of Homes. Everywhere we turned, Kingston had a glowing reputation.

After living in a nearly 4,500-square-foot home for 25 years, we knew exactly what we wanted—and what we didn’t want—in our next house. We wanted to downsize but keep all the rooms the same size, which was really important to us. I also dreamed of an L-shaped craftsman-style home with a certain number of bedrooms, and somehow, Kingston made it happen.

But with Kingston, we were able to sit down with Chris and their architect to design a home from the ground up, just the way we wanted it. This floor plan doesn’t even exist on Kingston’s website—it’s completely customized to fit our needs and our lifestyle.

Preparing your home for the season not only ensures comfort but also helps prevent costly repairs. We’ve outlined some tips to help you winterize your home and keep it safe and warm this season.

Seal and Insulate

One of the easiest ways to prepare your home for winter is to ensure it is correctly sealed. While our homes at Kingston meet or exceed industry standards in terms of energy efficiency, it’s important to maintain the weather seals around your doors and windows, no matter where you live. Drafts from windows, doors, outlets, and plumbing fixtures can significantly impact how well your house maintains a comfortable temperature. Sealing your home correctly is also an easy way to save money on your utility bills.

Good insulation is critical for keeping your house warm. If you are not living in a Kingston Home and are having difficulty keeping your home at a comfortable temperature, now is a great time to add extra insulation to your attic, crawl spaces, and walls to keep warm air inside and cold air out. However, Kingston-built homes are properly insulated and shouldn’t require you to add more.
